Girls Kicking Goals at “November Nines”

The CRL November Nines gets underway on Friday evening at Ziems Park, Corrimal, with Illawarra Division Rugby League again leading the way in developing opportunities for girls to try Rugby League in a tackle format. The Nines event will feature two divisions in both open age (18 years and over) and under 17 (girls 15-17 years).

The 2017 event will introduce over 100 females to the tackle format of the game, and many are expected to commit to participate in the 2018 Inspirations Paint Illawarra Women’s League. Women’s Rugby League continues to grow in the region and has had a presence since Illawarra established a competition in 2011. Pathways continue to grow with the increasing participation, and an expanded representative program in 2018 will see an under 18 Illawarra side play in selection trials for the Country team to take on City for the first time.

Illawarra Division Rugby League Manager Chris Bannerman hailed the success of the November Nines in drawing new players to the game. “The November Nines are providing over 100 new players an opportunity to try the tackle format of the game, and interest is coming from clubs who have not been involved in women’s Rugby League to date” said Bannerman.

“The nature of Nines and the contact clinics that NRL Development will conduct for new players in the initial weeks of the event, makes this an ideal way for females to get involved in the tackle format of the game for the first time.” Bannerman added.

The November Nines will commence on Friday 3 November at Ziems Park, Corrimal, continuing weekly over November with games played in the evening from around 5.30pm.

Clubs who have nominated teams include Corrimal, Berkeley, Helensburgh, Woonona-Bulli, Shellharbour Sharks, Shellharbour Stingrays, Milton-Ulladulla and Bomaderry. Girls interested in joining a team can still sign up by contacting Illawarra Division Rugby League Manager Chris Bannerman at cbannerman@steelers.com.au and registering their interest.
