Illawarra Division Rugby League November Nines

Following on from a very successful inaugural November Nines in 2016, Illawarra Division Rugby League will again provide an opportunity for new girls to try Rugby League in a tackle format, when the November Nines again kicks off on Friday 3 November, at Ziems Park, Corrimal.

The Nines event will feature two divisions in both open age (18 years and over) and under 17 (girls 15-17 years).

The 2016 event unearthed plenty of talent that went on to be a part of the inaugural Illawarra Steelers Tarsha Gale u18 Nines squad, and the 2017 November Nines will again be used to identify talent for this squad in 2018.

With the successful introduction of an under 18 division in the Inspirations Paint Illawarra Women’s League in 2017, girls who sample Rugby League at the November Nines and want to continue playing now have more options in terms of structured competitions and representative opportunities.

Illawarra Division Rugby League Manager Chris Bannerman hailed the success of the November Nines in drawing new players to the game. “With input from NRL Development we put together an event in 2016 which was focused on providing a fun and enjoyable introduction to new players, as well as assisting with skills development” he said. “This proved very successfully with over 70 new players joining competitions in open age and under 18s in 2017, after trying Rugby League in a tackle format for the first time at our November Nines.”

“As all teams are limited to only five players currently registered in 2017, each team is compelled to recruit around eight new players to take part in the competition and learn the game, so the Nines are an ideal opportunity for new players to try Rugby League. NRL Development will provide skills development before games commence in Round One to assist new players take part with confidence.” Bannerman added.

The November Nines will commence on Friday 3 November at Ziems Park, Corrimal, continuing weekly over November with games played in the evening from around 5.30pm.

Clubs who have nominated teams currently include Corrimal, Berkeley, Helensburgh, Woonona-Bulli, Shellharbour Sharks, Shellharbour Stingrays, Milton-Ulladulla and Bomaderry. Girls interested in joining a team can still sign up by contacting Illawarra Division Rugby League Manager Chris Bannerman at and registering their interest.
