Battle for semi-finals hots up

Mitch Jennings - Illawarra Mercury

THE battle for a top two finish continues to heat up with two rounds to play in the Group Seven regular season.

Gerringong maintained their three-point buffer at the top of the ladder via a hard-fought 26-24 win over Kiama at Michael Cronin Oval on Saturday in a match that ended at five tries apiece.

Peter Ford, Peter Cronin, Corey Mulhall, Lloyd Bowen and Nathan Ford all got across for the hosts while Dylan Morris and Tom Atkins both had doubles for the Knights. Jay Delaney also got across for the visitors with Joel Roberts’ three goals to Morris’ two proving the difference.

The Lions can sew up the minor premiership with a win over struggling Milton-Ulladulla next week ahead of a final round clash with Shellharbour.

Shellharbour and Jamberoo remain locked on 24 points in second and third with the Sharks maintaining a handy for and against advantage with a 68-4 win over Milton at Ron Costello Oval.

They’ll take on Albion Park next week ahead of a blockbuster final round clash with Gerringong that will likely determine whether they finish second or third on the ladder and a home semi-final.

Jamberoo were handy winners at Kevin Walsh Oval with a Ben Barnard hat-trick helping them to a 30-16 win over Berry-Shoalhaven Heads. The Superoos face Port Kembla away and Albion Park-Oak Flats at home to finish the season.

Elsewhere, Warilla beat Albion Park-Oak Flats 32-14 at Centenary Field while Port Kembla beat Nowra-Bomaderry 44-38 in a high-scoring affair at Noel Mulligan Oval.
