Canaries setting pace in Illawarra Coal League

Mitch Jennings - Illawarra Mercury

DAPTO remain unbeaten at the top of the Illawarra Coal League ladder after a comfortable 32-4 win over Berkeley on Saturday.

After fighting out a tough 16-all draw with Collegians last week, the Canaries will head into a week off due to the split round two points clear in top spot ahead of their clash with defending premiers Helensburgh in two week’s time.

The Canaries led 4-0 after Lulia Lulia’s try in the eight minute and 10-0 after 22 minutes following Justin Faughlin’s barge-over effort next to the posts.

Matt Johnstone scurried across in the 29th for a 16-0 lead his side held to the break.

Trent Vaughan scored for the hosts 14 minutes after the resumption to give his side a chance before Keith Lulia, Rob Bauserau and Johnstone all crossed in the final quarter to seal the win.

The only game remaining in a split round four is Wests clash with Corrimal at Parrish Park this Saturday before the competition resumed fully a week later.
