Steelers Challenge Cup Round 1
The Steelers Challenge Cup Round 1 games will continue this Saturday with a double-header of games at Helensburgh’s Rex Jackson Oval.
Kicking off at 2pm, Collegians under new coach Nathan Fien will take on Canberra Region Rugby League premiers and perennial powerhouse Queanbeyan Blues, who have Simon Woolford at the reigns. If both teams show the tenacity of their respective coaches, then a classic matchup is on offer for spectators. Collegians will have several new signings in their line-up including 2014 Paul McGregor Medallist from Helensburgh in backrower Blake Phillips, and Bronx Goodwin who has made the move from neighbours Wests.
At 4pm, the locals will find their voice to welcome the 2015 Challenge Cup champions and Illawarra Coal League premiers Helensburgh Tigers back onto the playing field. The ‘Burgh are without a few members of their grand final team from 2015, but still have plenty of quality in Country 1sts trio Wayne Bremner, Jarrod Boyle and captain Steve McCallum, as well as 2015 Paul McGregor medallist Grant Smith. Former Cronulla Shark Stewart Mills returns to the Tigers after a stint with the club in 2014.
The Corrimal Cougars will be looking to get the jump on the Tigers, hoping a premiership hangover might be apparent. The Cougars have a few new faces as well, and are determined to continue their 2015 improvement when they went close to a finals berth.
Winners of both games will face off in the second semi-final of the Steelers Challenge Cup on Saturday 12 March at Gibson Park, Thirroul, following the first semi-final between Dapto and Wests.
