Junior Steelers remain undefeated

THE Illawarra Steelers remain unbeaten in the elite junior representative competitions after a thumping win and tense draw against St George at Jubilee Oval.
The Steelers SG Ball under 18s side belted the Dragons 38-0, while the u16s Harold Matthews Cup clash finished in a thrilling 20-20 draw.
Illawarra beat North Sydney in both comps in the opening round and take on Central Coast at WIN Stadium on Saturday, with Matts Cup at 3pm followed by SG Ball (4.30pm).
The Dragons vs Steelers Harold Matthews Cup clash was a see-sawing affair; with the Steelers leading 10-0 but down 14-10 at half-time.
The Steelers led 20-14 but St George scored a late try, before Illawarra missed a match-winning penalty goal after the final siren.
‘‘The boys have improved a hell of a lot since our first trial against Illawarra, but there were just too many mistakes, particularly the in second half,’’ Dragons coach Graeme Wynn said.
Illawarra coach Adam Blake concurred.
“We had plenty of chances to win the match, as did St George, but neither team grabbed them and in the end a draw is probably a fitting result.’’
The Steelers dominated SG Ball, with a highlight a fine try out wide to Jackson Willis, which began with a break through the middle of the ruck by hooker Cooper Purcell.
Illawarra coach Shane Millard tempered his delight with the win saying there was room for improvement.
‘’We were terrific in patches, but we’ll be striving for increased consistency in coming weeks,’’ Millard said.
