Raiders of Group 16 as juniors join footy camp

Group 16 Rugby League juniors got a taste of the true NRL experience when they went in to a special training camp with the Canberra Raiders at the weekend.

A number of representative play hopefuls were selected for the special camp after a series of high performance clinics run over summer.

A joint effort by Group 16 and Red Energy, the clinics were aimed at retaining talented players between 16 and 18 in the sport, while providing skills and off-the-field training.

Representative coach Jason Kelly had some high praise for the group, which saw more than 40 kids take part at each camp.

“These kids are awesome, there is so much talent in our local region,” Kelly said.

Meanwhile, Group 16 president Dean Lynch said it was a real opportunity for some rising young stars of the sport.

“Don Furner and the Raiders are really keen to see what Group 16 can produce,” he said.

“This is a big opportunity for these young players.”

The selected roster were treated to a full-blown training session with the Raiders’ NRL line-up as well some of the aspiring Holden Cup roster.

The Raiders currently boast three former Group 16 players in their ranks and are looking to continue a partnership with the region in offering development pathways.
