2014 Illawarra Coal League Finals Series Week 4
Week three of the Illawarra Coal League finals saw grand finals contested in the under 17, Women in the Army League and Illawarra Coal Shield competitions at Dapto Showground.
In the under 17 plate final, Helensburgh and Dapto fought out a thriller with Helensburgh eventually running out 26-24 winners. Helensburgh backrower Phil Astill took the player of the match honours.
The under 17 grand final saw Cronulla-Caringbah and De La Salle go to the halftime break locked at nil-all, with Cronulla-Caringbah making the most of several scoring opportunities in the 2nd half to take the title 24-0. Cronulla-Caringbah winger Will Kennedy was named player of the match.
In the Women in the Army Illawarra League grand final hot favourites were not to be denied, despite a spirited effort from Port Kembla. The Tigerlillies ran out winners 42-6 with backrower Kezie Apps taking player of the match honours after bagging four tries.
The Illawarra Coal Shield grand final delivered a thriller for the big crowd on hand. Halftime saw the teams level at 6-all, Norths taking the advantage with a 2nd half try to hold on until with less than two minutes on the clock the Cougars snatched an unlikely victory to take the title 12-10. Player of the match was Cougars backrower Adam Kerr.
Sunday’s preliminary finals saw Wests qualify for Sunday’s Colts grand final by handing out a 40-6 hiding to Dapto. The Red Devils now face a re-match of the major semi-final clash against Collegians in the premiership decider. In 2nd grade Wests held off a late challenge from Helensburgh to win 24-18 and now take on minor premiers Thirroul in next week’s grand final. In 1st grade Helensburgh ran down Wests after being down 16-6 at halftime to storm home and win 22-16.
Week four of the Illawarra Coal League finals action sees the culmination of the 2014 season with grand finals in Colts, 2nd grade and 1st grade on Sunday 7 September.
