UPDATE: 2014 Illawarra Coal League Finals Series Week 3

Week two of the Illawarra Coal League finals produced some cliff-hangers and healthy crowds as players got back onto the field of play after minor semi-finals in week one were the victim of the big wet.

At Ziems Park on Saturday in the under 17 final, De La Salle showed their class over Dapto with a 24-6 win., and now face off against rivals Cronulla-Caringbah in next Saturday’s grand final. Dapto will playoff against Helensburgh in the under 17 plate final.

In the Women in the Army Illawarra League final Corrimal never really got into stride and Port Kembla took full advantage to grind out a 20 – 12 win and earn the right to take on the undefeated Helensburgh.

In the Illawarra Coal Shield final, Mt Kembla fell to competition frontrunners Norths who bounced back from last week’s first loss of the year to defending premiers Corrimal. Norths lead 12-6 at halftime and went on with the job in the second half to run out 32-6 winners. A rematch of the 2013 grand final next Saturday gives Norths their chance for revenge against the Cougars.

In Illawarra Coal League minor semi-finals on Saturday, Wests fended off a strong challenge from Collies to advance to Sundays final at WIN Stadium with a 32-18 win. A thrilling 2nd grade minor semi saw Helensburgh fight back to lock scores up at 36 all at the final whistle. In a frenetic golden point period, Helensburgh centre Michael Stone snatched the winning try to give Helensburgh a 40-36 win and send them to Sunday’s final.

Sunday’s major semi-finals saw a great effort in the Colts competition from Collies to roll minor premiers Wests and advance to the grand final on Sunday 7 September at WIN Stadium. In the 2nd grade major semi, Thirroul dominated Wests and held off a late finish to take an 18-10 victory. The first grade encounter was a thriller with Thirroul and Helensburgh going to halftime at 12-all, and the match finishing at 18-all. After the first period of golden point teams were still locked up, with Nathan Fien eventually snapping a smart field-goal to send the Butchers to the grand final.
