Bega star Kezie Apps selected in Australian Jillaroos squad

Making the leap into full contact women’s rugby league is paying off for Bega star Kezie Apps. Kezie was on Thursday night named in the Australia Jillaroos squad that will play a four nations contest later this year.

Apps shared her fantastic news via social media on Thursday night.

"I honestly can't describe how I'm feeling, I'm so excited and shocked that all my dreams have become reality all in one year,’ Apps said.

“I was only dreaming about playing for Australia last year as I was watching the girls play the World Cup and that's what I wanted to do - and now I'm going to be doing that.

“It's just crazy.

“Playing for my state was so good, I can't image what the feeling is going to be like to play for your country.

“I won't be able to sleep tonight that's for sure.”

Apps caught the eye of national selectors with a stand-out performance for NSW in the State of Origin full contact clash in July (BDN, 21/7).

The match, played at Leichardt Oval, was Apps’ debut for the NSW squad, after only taking up full contact earlier this year.

Apps’ performance, which included a 50-metre solo try, earned the title of best on ground by NSW head coach Matt Head.

She also made 27 tackles to lead the count for NSW and also ran 10 carries of the ball.

In what was to become a wonderfully prophetic call, Bega Chicks coach Andrew Badullovich said Apps’ performance in that game should put her in good stead for an Aussie jersey.

“Kezie was by far the most devastating player on the oval in both attack and defence, and deserves a shot in a green and gold jersey,” Badullovich said after the game.

The Jillaroos will head into camp next month before the four nations tournament in November.
