Gaters Display Menacing Early Form

Sandgate Brighton Gaters have staked an early claim as the team to beat in 2013, shooting to the top of the second division ladder, with a superb display of football downing hosts Souths Juniors 48-16.

The Gaters’ backline led the way, with stand-out performances from Steve Franciscus and Sam Martin, seemingly creating holes at will, as the team crossed the line 10 times.

Souths struggled to contain the speed of the Gaters’ wing, coming up off the line well and containing the forwards, but failing to slide adequately to protect the sideline.

The visitors drew first blood in the first five minutes off the back of a penalty and a flurry of offloads, to put Marlon Doak, across the line. Fast forward 10 minutes, and the Gaters had crossed another two times, with Selo Mataele and Franciscus both setting up tries to blow the score out to 14-0 with only 12 minutes gone.

The home side’s straight and solid running game soon paid dividends, slotting Nick Lund over the line after a couple of hard and fast sets to put the scoreboard at 14-6 after 20 minutes.

However, any prospect of a Souths comeback evaporated – a runaway Gaters outfit notched another three quick-fire tries, blowing the margin out to 28-6 at the break.

The second-half saw Souths Juniors shooting out of the blocks, in a complete role-reversal of the first-half. The Gaters appeared to be caught off-guard by their newly invigorated rivals, seemingly unsure of themselves in attack and dominated by Souths in defence thanks to the boot of Souths’ halfback Terrence Hill, and a consistent, hard-hitting barrage from the forward pack.

With 32 minutes left on the clock, Souths had clawed back the deficit, complements of tries from Simanu Chrichton and Ash Bull, and Terrence Hill’s precision kicking to reset the board 16-28.

Souths’ surge of momentum was short lived however; as the Gaters rediscovered the form and fearlessness that had defined their first-half effort and piled on try after try until the final whistle. Souths continued to look dangerous, particularly when the ball found Terrence Hill, but failed to capitalise on opportunities near the goal-line.

The full-time hooter marked a commanding 48-16 win to the bayside team, including a four-try tally for the Gaters’ Sam Martin and doubles to Marlon Doak and Steve Franciscus.
