Rivalry heats up in Ladies league

BY ZAC LUKE (CQ NEWS)

ACROSS the Central Highlands tomorrow night, local rugby league fixtures will carry a bit of extra weight during CHRL's Rivalry Round.

The round will open with a Ladies League 'State of Origin' match between Clermont-Middlemount and Emerald-Springsure, but CHRL secretary Cameron Stallard said it would be more than just a warm up.

"I can guarantee that it's going to be a great match," Stallard said.

"It'll be a very tough match and a very skilful one as well."

Stallard said the game would showcase women's rugby league in the Central Highlands.

"There were a few doubters of women's rugby league at the start of the season," he said.

"They were proved wrong in the first game and they've been proved wrong in every game since."

He said the North and South ladies sides would not be taking things easy on each other.

"They (each) think that they play a better brand of footy," he said.

Stallard said the men's matches would also mean a lot to all the clubs.

"This round is probably one of the most important and best to watch," he said.

Springsure and Middlemount will play off for the inaugural Allen Johnson Memorial Shield, which Springsure coach Gary Mayne said would bring out both sides' best.

"It'll mean a lot to them to play well," Mayne said.

"(Middlemount) will be up for it, don't worry about that, and the same with us."

With both teams searching for their first wins of the season, Mayne said the game should be a "special" one.

"It'll be intense," he said.
