Five teams about to become four

CAMERON STALLARD

Heading into the final round, the five remaining teams in the Purcell’s Engineering Men’s competition are about to become four with Bluff or the Tigers set to secure the fourth and final spot - ironically, having to battle each other for the remaining finals ticket.

This is also the case in the Pirtek Emerald Women’s competition with the Cowgirls and Dysart clashing to set a date with the Blackwater Crushettes next week in the elimination final.

This weekend’s draw sees five out of the six games have a bearing on the finals makeup.
Below is this week’s draw:

Dysart Bulls v Emerald Cowboys
5.30pm Saturday – Hickey Oval Dysart

Blackwater Crushers v Clermont Bears
7pm Saturday – Hinrick’s Oval Blackwater
Live action on Spreaker from 6.45pm

Emerald Tigers v Bluff Rabbitohs
1pm Sunday – McIndoe Park Emerald
Live action on Spreaker from 12.45pm

Springsure Mountain Men v Middlemount Panthers
4pm Sunday – Bauhinia Park Springsure
Live action on Spreaker from 3.45pm

Clermont Bears Ladies v Blackwater Crushettes
5.30pm Saturday – Hinrick’s Oval Blackwater
Live action on Spreaker from 5.15pm

Dysart Bulls Ladies v Emerald Cowgirls
7.30pm Saturday – Hickey Oval Dysart

Here are the scenarios ahead of the final round:

PURCELL’S ENGINEERING MEN’S COMPETITION

#1 – Clermont Bears
POINTS: 19
THIS SEASON: 9W, 3L, 1D
F&A: +207
DRAW: Blackwater (away)
BEST FINISH: 1st
WORST FINISH: 2nd

A gallant win by Clermont last Saturday against Springsure has put them in the box seat for this year’s minor premiership. All they must do is beat Blackwater to go from wooden spooners to minor premiers in the space of 12 months.

If not, they’ll still secure a top two spot and a Saturday night final in the hope of securing the grand final in Clermont.

#2 – Springsure Mountain Men
POINTS: 18
THIS SEASON: 9W, 4L, 0D
F&A: +134
DRAW: Middlemount (home)
BEST FINISH: 1st
WORST FINISH: 3rd

The heavy defeat last weekend to Clermont would’ve hurt the Mountain Men, and to rub salt into the wounds, sees the bid for the minor premiership reliant on the Clermont v Blackwater game.

The Mountain Men need to win if they want to book a date with Clermont the following week to seek revenge.

If they lose to the Panthers, they’ll finish third and end the home and away season with two losses going into the finals.

#3 – Middlemount Panthers
POINTS: 18
THIS SEASON: 9W, 4L, 0D
F&A: +130
DRAW: Springsure (away)
BEST FINISH: 1st
WORST FINISH: 3rd

Middlemount put on a show last Friday night at their 35-year reunion with a 56-6 thrashing of Blackwater. This keeps their opportunity of a top two finish well and truly alive.

All they must do is defeat Springsure who may be down on confidence after last week’s defeat, and even though it’s a long road trip to face their opponents, the Panthers are coming off a high from last week’s big win.

#4 – Bluff Rabbitohs
POINTS: 15
THIS SEASON: 7W, 5L, 1D
F&A: +34
DRAW: Tigers (away)
BEST FINISH: 4th
WORST FINISH: 5th

Bluff would’ve been surprised at Dysart’s effort last week but in the end, the Rabbitohs were far too good, winning 40-22.

They simply must defeat the Tigers or lose and concede 20 or less points to book themselves a ticket in this year’s finals race.

#5 – Emerald Tigers
POINTS: 13
THIS SEASON: 6W, 6L, 1D
F&A: -8
DRAW: Bluff (home)
BEST FINISH: 4th
WORST FINISH: 5th

Last week’s dominant 56-12 win over the Emerald Cowboys has aided the Tigers’ 11th hour quest to defend their premiership title.

They must defeat Bluff by 22 or more points on Sunday to sneak into the four, otherwise they’ll enjoy the rest of the day with a beer in hand for Silly Sunday.

PIRTEK EMERALD WOMEN’S COMPETITION

#1 – Emerald Tigers Ladies
POINTS: 22
THIS SEASON: 9W, 3L, 0D
F&A: +364
DRAW: Bye
BEST FINISH: 1st
WORST FINISH: 2nd

It’s a waiting game for the Tigers Ladies.

Either way, they’ll finish top two but are sweating on the Crushettes to upset the Bears so they can be crowned minor premiers and host next week’s Friday night final.

#2 – Clermont Bears Ladies
POINTS: 22
THIS SEASON: 9W, 2L, 0D
F&A: +290
DRAW: Blackwater Crushettes (away)
BEST FINISH: 1st
WORST FINISH: 2nd

The Bears were challenged by the Dysart Bulls Ladies last Saturday but were able to get the win to draw level with the Tigers on competition points.

To make it back-to-back minor premierships, the Bears must draw with or defeat the Crushettes by any margin. It was a close affair the last time these two teams met on Clermont’s territory – will it be a different result at the Coal Capital?

#3 – Blackwater Crushettes
POINTS: 18
THIS SEASON: 7W, 4L, 0D
F&A: +244
DRAW: Clermont Bears Ladies (home)
BEST FINISH: 3rd
WORST FINISH: 3rd

The best and worst the Crushettes can finish is third so this week’s results won’t have any bearing on the finals for them, but a win in the last home game of the year would be nice, spoiling the Bears’ chance of the minor premiership.

#4 – Emerald Cowboys
POINTS: 8
THIS SEASON: 2W, 9L, 0D
F&A: -400
DRAW: Dysart Bulls Ladies (away)
BEST FINISH: 4th
WORST FINISH: 5th

The Cowgirls have had an up and down year and end the regular season with their toughest road trip of the year.

Their season is on the line and Bulls will be ready to not only take the two points but steal fourth spot from the Cowgirls.

They must defeat Dysart or lose but not concede more than 50 points to keep their date with Blackwater in the elimination final next weekend.

#5 – Dysart Bulls Ladies
POINTS: 6
THIS SEASON: 1W, 10L, 0D
F&A: -498
DRAW: Emerald Cowgirls (home)
BEST FINISH: 4th
WORST FINISH: 5th

Dysart should be proud of their performance last weekend against Clermont and have a tough task this weekend, luckily it is at home.

They must defeat the Cowgirls by 50 or more points to play finals footy. They defeated the Cowgirls in the last clash between the two sides and the home supporter base will be cheering the ladies on in the hope of making it into the finals.
