Tigers return Wren Cup to trophy cabinet

The Emerald Tigers have held onto the Wren Cup for another year, beating the Barcaldine Sandgoannas 26-24 at the weekend.

Now in its fifth year, the Wren Cup teams are captained by brothers Luke and Mark Wren who created the concept as a charity game.

"We won it last year though last year we went into golden point in the 85th minute,” Luke Wren said.

"We had the cup and took it out there, every home team has won it every year except this year when we won it out there.

"Our side was made up mostly of the grand final team last year.

"It was always pretty close, we did have the bigger side but they had a smaller but quick side. They nearly went try to try with us.

"The whole day is a charity game, we donate proceeds to our chosen charities.”

Profits from the day are pooled together and split between Luke's chosen charity is Central Family Support in Emerald and Mark's selected organisation Barcaldine Aged Care.

While it is still early days to know final fundraising figures from this year's game, the Wren Cup has raised more than $40,000 in the last four years.
