Springsure and Rolleston ready to give it their all for charity

CAMERON STALLARD

It’s the game that stops a region!

The annual Springsure Mountain Men vs Rolleston Roos hybrid charity match kicks off tonight from 7pm at the Springsure Sporting Complex.

The event, which raised over $14,000 last year for local charities, is hoping to match last year’s fundraising efforts for much needed services like the RACQ Capricorn Helicopter Rescue Service and Ivy Anderson home.

The concept of tonight’s match was devised in 2013 when both clubs wanted to play a game for charity that showcases both codes.

One half of the game will be played as Rugby Union and the other half will be played as Rugby League.

With the huge expansion of Ladies footy in the Central Highlands, this year will also feature a Ladies game of the same concept featuring a mix of Central Highlands Rugby League and Central Highlands Rugby Union Ladies playing against each other.

Springsure captain Jared Owens says the defending premiers have been training hard for the last two weeks and should be competitive during the union half.

“As for our training leading into this game, we have had two nights with a former rugby coach, who is the current principal at the local school. He has a wealth of knowledge and has given us an insight into Rugby Union,” Owens said.

“If we can stay in the game and be competitive in the Rugby Union half of the game, we should go ok!”

Owens urges everyone to head down and support these great charities tonight with the game a meaningful one to many.

“Tonight’s game means a lot to not only the Mountain Men but more importantly the community itself. Last year the game raised a massive amount that went out to local charities and that is what it is all about.”

“If you are in the area or have nothing on, come down and watch the ladies play before us and most important, dig deep as it all stays local!

The Ladies game kicks off at 5pm, followed by the big one at 7pm. A bar and canteen will be running and all playing jerseys will be auctioned off for charity at the end of both games.
