Bluff Nines open season
A WEEK after National Rugby League's Auckland Nines, the Bluff Rabbitohs will host their own event, showcasing the best talent of the Central Highlands.
The shorter form of the game will offer spectators a fast-flowing, high-scoring brand of football suited to the hot February weather.
Central Highlands' president Frank Lambley said all local clubs would take part, along with Woorabinda and Gladstone ones. The carnival will kick off at Macca's Oval, Bluff, on Saturday, February 13.
"With the number of teams in the Highlands alone, we had enough for our own competition, but other clubs have expressed interest so the more the merrier," Lambley said.
"Nines football will offer a bit more open field running, the outside backs should thrive in the heat of the day. I think we will see some great footy displayed.
"Because Easter is early, we won't have time for a pre-season competition and the later we get into March we clash with other competitions. So this should come at the right time.
"We will likely have two pools for men and one for women."
