Storky's Footy Talk - Round 9
GRAHAM "STORKY" CAMPBELL
The Mountain Men were too good for the Cowboys in Springsure winning 56-24.
Springsure started their campaign with Jared Owens from individual work scoring after 5 minutes. The tussle was on from the start with both forwards matching each other with Ash and Matt Travers taking it up for the Mountain Men.
Mick Battye and Zac Seden were the big forwards for the Cowboys. Mick Battye threw a great offload to the running support players early on and we thought the Cowboys were away but the defence of the Mountain Men held on.
Terry Delalande from a good ruck scored a great try. Springsure's two centres in Charlie Mayne and Ben Kerswell, who normally plays fullback, were having good games out wide making plenty of yards when they ran the ball. Fullback Hayden Marshall worked well all game chiming in the back line raids.
Branden Kadel scored for the Cowboys regathering a kick through from Andrew Doyle to score having the score at 12-6 to Springsure. Lawson Storey had a good game for the Cowboys rucking it up all game and tackling what was in front of him. There was a good old stash in the middle of the field but I was unable to recognise any players involved.
Terry Delalande was then tackled near the line but stretched out to score again. Fullback for the Cowboys Andrew Doyle chip-kicked and regathered to score one of his two tries and his next try came off running off a Sam Clayton pass to go through the defence to the line.
Sam Clayton was pushing the passes and his team mates to make ground. To finish the first half front rower Ash Travers took a ball from a tap 20 metres out and was mistackled by the Cowboys to score leaving the halftime score 24-12 towards the home side.
After a minute into the second half, Charlie Mayne scooted 90 metres to start the scoring in the second half for the Mountain Men.
To the Cowboys' credit, they worked the opposition and scored a try out to Ben Kemp to register his first try for a few years.
The Mountain Men at home are hard to beat and they took control with good work from Anthony Hafey and Sam Cronk. Hayden Marshall scored a great try from a kick from Jared Owens and again another try from a Owens offload. The two centres Charlie Mayne and Ben Kerswell both finished the game with a try.
Jack Edwards had a good game for the Cowboys on the wing finishing off back line movements. Bryce Loch was more involved in this game with plenty of hit up and tackles. Kieren Pratt was involved at hooker and he needs more game time.
The Mountain Men continue their good form at home and coach Warren Sullivan was happy with the results. He is looking forward to the coming weeks as they want to make the finals. Good luck to the Mountain Men!
Man of the match for the Cowboys was Lawson Storey and for the Mountain Men, Ash Travers.
