Storky's Footy Talk - Round 1

Well football competition starts this weekend, thank goodness!

The first double header will be in Emerald this weekend at McIndoe Park. The Tigers will take on the Dysart Bulls in both Ladies and Men’s team. Tigers have had good hit out at the Wren Cup and they had two teams playing that day. Tigers are coached by Brett Weatherley and Ray Ebsworth and they have had plenty of players attending the games and training.  The ladies team also played against a combined team. They have been getting plenty of Match fitness. Cloe Ramsay and Casey Watkins are danger players. The Dysart ladies have played a trial and Rhiannon Rowe is there again to lead the team around.

Cowboys Men's coached by Brendan Rouse are up against the Middlemount Panthers who had a good trial against the Mackay Norths in Middlemount. The Middlemount fields looked a treat that night. Cowboys have had good numbers at training and expecting good things from Andrew Doyle this year. The Cowgirls have been training and under coach Justin Howard we should see some improvement from last year. Meagan Latham and Shae Boag have been training the house down.

The Clermont Bears will travel to Bluff to play the reining premiers tomorrow night. I see this as a good game for the start of the season. Both teams have had to rebuild because players have left or retired. They again will be the leader of the comp. The Clermont Ladies have always been strong due to their representative players and coach Carly Bell will lead from fullback in the front.

Springsure will host Blackwater and Springsure had a good hitout against the Tigers and showed they will be a force this year. They have a lot of players keen to have a good year. Coach Matty Travers will play and lead the players around the paddock. Crushers coached by new coach Shane Shoesmith has been short on numbers and has played a trial against Dawson Valley, Rocky Brothers and Cowboys. We’ll see the game tomorrow night to gauge both teams season. Blackwater Ladies coached by Jay Denman has a similar side to last year and they will be one of the leaders in the competition. Being lead around the park by the Storch sisters Mariah and Peyton and Olivia Hamilton.

Bruce Ryan is leading the referees this year again and is doing a good job with training and development. In the preseason we have seen a lot of junior referees out there doing the job. Steve Hamilton has been out inspecting the referees in action and also a couple of clinics he has run. There are about nine plus referees ready for the A Grade Men’s and ladies competition this season.

Enjoy your local league!
