BLUES SINK GREENS BUT HAVE WORK TO DO: TEKA
By Les Muir
TUMUT coach Jarrad Teka was left with serious concerns after the Blues downed Tumbarumba 20-10 at Twickenham on Sunday.
Although never in real danger, Tumut still made hard work of disposing of the gritty Greens.
In an unconvincing performance, Tumut not only failed to capitalise on prime scoring chances, but were left with injuries to several key players to cloud the outcome.
Taking stock of the four tries to two success, Teka said the Blues had not been at their sharpest in overcoming last-placed Tumbarumba.
“Full credit to Tumba for turning up to play,” Teka said.
“They played well, but our execution let us down.
“We didn’t make the most of our opportunities.
“Early on I thought we might run up a big score, but it didn’t work out.”
Teka is adamant the Blues cannot carry their current form into the finals or they will pay the price.
“We need to improve,” he said.
“We definitely can’t get ahead of ourselves at the moment.”
For Tumut, Sunday’s lacklustre victory pushed the team to a clear fourth on the ladder and five points clear of Albury and Temora.
As much as the Blues are firmly entrenched for a shot at the finals, Teka is aware they are looking vulnerable.
“There are six weeks to go and we’ll go to training on Tuesday and review this performance,” he said.
Tumut got the jump on Tumbarumba when speedster Mitch Ivill sizzled over for two tries in the opening 15 minutes.
Up 10-0, Tumut was stung when Tumbarumba winger Nemia Uluimalolo snatched a try, but the Blues retaliated with a try to tearaway Tamati Ioane to be up 16-4 at halftime.
Shaking things up, Uluimalolo bagged his second try to start the second half, cutting Tumut’s lead to 16-10.
Ultimately, Ivill needed to bolt over for his third try in the 66th minute to give Tumut some breathing space.
Yet again, Ioane was outstanding for the winners, but Braden Draber and skipper Adam Pearce were also stand outs for the winners.
Teka said Pearce was a great leader and an inspiration to the team.
