SATURDAY NIGHT GRAND FINAL FOR GROUP NINE
By Les Muir
GROUP Nine will break with tradition and ditch its regular Sunday grand final timeslot in September.
In a breathtaking change, the Group Nine grand final will be played at 6pm on a Saturday evening.
The Group Nine board has decided to move the grand final from Sunday, September 10 to Saturday, September 9.
The board will meet with the 11 clubs on Wednesday to officially ratify the change, although approval is not required.
Group Nine operations manager Peter Ryan said only one member of the board had voted against the change.
Ryan said the dissenter had voiced concerns over the financial viability of the switch, but Group Niine treasurer Brian Walker had backed the move.
The radical change has already gained approval on social media, with Group Nine referee Ben Whitby describing it as a “brilliant decision”.
“This has made my day,” Whitby tweeted on Twitter.
Likewise, Albury identity Ethan Schultz tweeted the Saturday timeslot would be “awesome”.
