Junior Spotlight - Wide Bay Primary Schools Carnival

The Carnival was an enormous success with all 6 Primary School Zones in Wide Bay represented in 2 separate divisions. Over 130 girls participated in 30 games of rugby league (20 min games with 5 min ½ time) and a tackle coaching session, with 40 schools from throughout Wide Bay represented. Hervey Bay won both the A and B Division finals however there were a number of extremely close games especially in the A Division.

Hervey Bay Division A coach Michael Hutchinson said: “All girls had a fantastic time and enjoyed the games immensely. The quality of skills displayed was of a very high standard. Look out boys!! Parents were impressed with the high level of organization and the time spent coaching and preparing the girls for the Carnival.”

Maryborough coach Jason Rossiter was delighted with the efforts and enthusiasm of his girls and looks forward to 2012 when many will return as Yr 7 pupils.

Convenor Richard Dugdale (Australian Rugby League Development) was extremely happy with both the high standard of play and the number of girls who not only participated but also attended initial trials. A number of Zones have indicated they will participate in the Bronco Challenge at Redcliffe following the success of the Wide Bay Carnival. The 2012 Carnival will also double as a selection trial to pick Wide Bay Rugby League U/12 and U/14 representative girls teams to play against Brisbane, Toowoomba and Sunshine Coast representative teams.
