Round 16 First Grade Women’s Preview
By Matt Hughes (NRL Vic Media)
With two weeks to go in the Women’s First Grade Season, competition for finals spots is heating up. Currently five out of the seven teams can qualify for finals, making this Saturday’s games a must win for a lot of teams.
Altona versus Werribee Bears Red shapes as a season-defining clash for the Roosters. If Altona beat the Bears, they will cement their finals position and could finish as high as third with a win next week. However, if the 7th placed Bears stage an upset and Altona lose again next week, the Roosters risk losing their finals spot to Melton.
The Bears Red have been much improved in recent weeks, getting their first win of the season against the Broncos in round 13. They will be keen to finish on a high with a win against their higher-ranked opposition.
Similar to Altona, the Northern Thunder need a win to guarantee finals. They play first-placed Werribee Bears Black on Saturday. The Bears have sewn up a top two position and a win will put them in a good place to win the minor premiership.
Expect a tough contest between the two sides.
Even though Casey/Eastern can’t make finals an upset over the equal-first-placed Rabbitohs would hold them in good stead for next season. Similar to the Bears Black, The Rabbitohs can’t finish outside the top two, but need a win if they are to take out the minor premiership.
Werribee haven’t lost since round one, so Casey will have to be at their best to have any chance of winning.
Melton Broncos have the bye meaning the two points they receive will put them on 14 points. If they are to make finals, they need to win next week and either Altona or Northern have to lose both of their final two games.
