Women’s First Grade Round 13 Preview

By Matt Hughes (NRL Vic Media)

This Saturday sees some tantalising matchups take place in round 13 of the NRL Victoria Women’s First Grade competition.

At Clearwood Drive Reserve first-placed Truganina Rabbitohs take on Casey/Eastern. The Rabbitohs have been unbeatable this season and are coming off a big win against Werribee Bears Red last week.

The last time the two teams met was in round four and although the Rabbitohs ran out convincing winners, Casey will take confidence from the fact they have been competitive in most of their matches since.

Over at Haines Drive Reserve seventh-placed Werribee Bears Red will take on fifth-placed Melton Broncos. Although the Bears haven’t mustered a win yet this season, a good contest is expected after the Bears put together their most competitive performance against the Broncos in round ten.

The Broncos on the other hand have compiled four wins this year and are looking impressive.

Last but not least, the match between the Northern Thunder and the Altona Roosters is shaping up to be the game of the round. The two sides are sitting in third and fourth on the ladder and are equal on 12 points.

The two sides met each other in round four but unfortunately the match was called off due to injury. Both teams will be keen to get one over the other and move themselves up the ladder.

Speaking ahead of the game, Altona coach Brandon Taunoa said he has seen a lot of improvement in his women’s side.

“We started off slow, so we’ve come a long way,” he said.

“Our confidence has built and now we are sitting fourth.”

The coach expects a physical game against the Thunder.

“They’ll come out firing,” Taunoa said.

“They have a strong forward pack, but we can match them and their physicality.”

Taunoa listed Temaleti Taunisila, Santorio Faafo, Liz Koti, Kalatiola Taunisila and Moronieca Lepua as some of the Roosters standout players over the year.
