Truganina Champions in Dominant Grand Final Win

The Final of the Women’s First Grade was a match-up between the best team for most part of 2017 season in Truganina, and the fairy-tale run for Doveton. Doveton finished their season in fourth position, scraping into the Finals, but with nail-biting wins against Casey and Altona, they were able to earn their spot in the Final.

Truganina showed their class for majority of the game however, using their speed and pace and benefiting from the week off, while Doveton looked weary after their two tough weeks in a row.

Jamie Te Pania set the scene for the Rabbitohs, using her pace and agility from full back to ease past defenders, and either set her team mates up for tries, or score them herself.

Having only lost one game for the season, the Rabbitohs looked in control from start to finish in this matchup, showing a strong physical presence complimented by speed and agility on the outside.

However, it was evident the football over the past few weeks had impacted the Steelers, with Truganina scoring majority of their tries with breakaways and open fields. Yet while looking fatigued and weary, many of them not only took part in this game, but then raced over to compete in the Women’s Tag Final, showing their dedication and skill in the two divisions.

The Rabbitohs proved too much for the Steelers however, running out 28-4 victors in a dominating display from the beginning to the end.

Jean-Shannel Schmidt continued her fantastic form from the season, scoring the lone try for the Steelers. Te Pania was helped with individual tries from Janetta Valoletama, Te Aroha Hapuku, Katrina Edwards and Ofoi Taumoelau helping the Rabbitohs claim their first ever Premiership since joining the competition in 2015.

Truganina entered the NRL Victoria competition in 2015, and made their first appearance in Grand Finals this season, in both the Women’s First and Men’s Second Division.
