Excitement was in the air at three Mudgee schools on Wednesday when former Australian, NSW, St George Illawarra and Cronulla Sharks five-eighth Trent Barrett paid a visit.

The Country Origin assistant coach was in town to help promote the Country-City match on April 22 in Mudgee and to run through some rugby league skills.

Since retiring at the end of the 2010 season, Barrett is an ambassador for the NRL and Country Rugby League.

He goes around to NSW schools promoting the sport.

But he said his visit to Mudgee was simple.

"Mainly to spread the word of the Country-City game on the 22nd and let the kids know we have got a big gala day, and a big [coaching] clinic on the 18th," Barrett said.

The former NSW captain visited Mudgee Public School, Cudgegong Valley Public School and St Matthews Catholic School.

He helped with some drills and answered questions about rugby league.

He also gave away tickets to the big game at Glen Willow to some lucky students.

"We like to focus on our junior participation but also focussing on the girls," he said.

"There are plenty of options for girls to be involved in rugby league. They play league tag or watch the footy.

"We also have our programs in our schools like Rugby League Reads, Dream-Believe-Achieve, and Eat Well, Play Well and Stay Well.

"They are three of the programs we introduced to all of our schools.

"I'm blessed to be able to being involved in rugby league. It has been the main part of my life for a long time. I'm in a privileged position and it's good to come out here to see all the kids."

Barrett and the rest of the Country boys will arrive in Mudgee on Monday, April 15.

The coaching clinic will be held on Wednesday, April 18, from 10am.

Registration is essential for the clinic; visit the Country Rugby League or Mudgee Junior Rugby League websites for details.
