Colleen Furgeson has been selected to represent the Marshall Islands at the upcoming 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
The excited teenager from Kwajalein, will be representing the swim team in the 50m freestyle event and admits to having “worked really hard for this and can’t wait to see what happens”.
As a result, she has ensured that she has given herself the best possible chance of fulfilling her own aims.
Furgeson, who has been in Florida at a training camp in preparation for the Games, has been talking about the struggles of adapting to the fresh water in the pool, as opposed to the salt water she has been used to swimming in, back on the Marshall Islands. However, two training sessions a day, both of two hours in length has helped her to become more accustomed to this different swimming environment, explaining that “the more times I swim in it, the more I get comfortable”.
In addition to this, Furgeson has had a strong build up to the Games, where she even exceeded her own expectations when competing at this year’s Oceania Swimming Championships, having obtained more personal bests than she thought she might achieve. Therefore, experience at one major swimming event this year has further helped Furgeson prepare for South America where she hopes her time will do justice to the amount of effort that she has put in to ensure she reaps maximum rewards.
Furgeson, who only took up swimming seriously at the age of thirteen, is keen to emphasise that her main aim at the Games is to make sure she does everyone back in the Marshall Islands proud along with the country’s other swimmer Giordan Harris.
“My number one goal is representing my country the best I can, I want my country to be proud of Giordan and I”.
It is without doubt that Furgeson is extremely motivated to meet her targets at the Games of the thirty-first Olympiad in Rio.
Furgeson swims in the Women’s fifty metre freestyle on Friday 12th August at the Olympic Aquatics Stadium in the Olympic Park.
