Oceania Volleyball Championship kicks off in Fiji

 Lausanne, Switzerland, May 2, 2016 – The 2016 Handy Finance Oceania Volleyball Championship was officially opened by Laisania Tuitubou, the Fiji Minister for Youth and Sports, on Monday as he welcomed seven participating countries representing 10 women’s teams and nine men’s teams.

 
The Fiji men’s and women’s teams kicked off the competition with 3-0 wins over Kiribati and the Solomon Islands, respectively, and this set the momentum for the competition with the local crowd. 
 
In the Men’s Division, Tonga faced a tough challenge from the Solomon Islands before winning in four sets (25-18, 22-25, 25-19, 25-19) with Samoa and Fiji Blue having straight-sets wins.
 
In the Women’s Division, Fiji White, Fiji Blue, Samoa A and Tonga recorded 3-0 wins. Solomon Islands B recorded a win in their second match against Tuvalu 3-0 (25-14, 25-17, 25-23).
 
The second day of competition will be tougher with New Caledonia set to play their first match against Samoa in the Men’s Division and Kiribati in the women’s division.
