Fiji to host ITF event

SUVA, 13 NOVEMBER 2015 ( FIJI TIMES) ---Fiji will once again host the International Tennis Federation (ITF) sanctioned junior tennis tournaments in the country next year.

The OTC executives held its annual executive meeting in Nadi last week, where the dates for the tournaments were finalised.

The West Pacific qualifiers will be held in early May followed by the ITF South Pacific Open Junior Championship from June 21-26.

The ITF Oceania Open Junior Championship will be played from June 27 to July 1. The ITF Oceania Closed Championship will be played from August 8-12 followed by the ITF Pacific Oceania Junior Championship from August 15-24.

All these tournaments will be staged at the Regional Tennis Centre in Lautoka.

Tennis Fiji secretary John Shannon said the country had a lot to benefit from hosting the international tournaments.

Shannon said it not only helps lift the standard of the sport here but also boosts tourism.

"The ITF sanctioned junior tournaments have attracted many top players from around the world in the past," he said.

"Nick Kyrgios of Australia who is the world number 30 won his first ITF junior tournament in Lautoka back in 2010 as a 15-year-old."

Meanwhile some of the local players are expected to be named in the Pacific Oceania junior team to tour New Zealand and Australia in December and January......PACNEWS
