SUVA, 15 OCTOBER 2015 (FBC SPORTS) ---The Fiji Association of Sports and National Olympic Committee (FASANOC) have set an estimated preparation budget of $3.9 million (US$1.8 million) for the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.
Team Fiji Chef de Mission, Cathy Wong says this will cover the preparation costs for each of the potential qualifying sports such as weightlifting, athletics, women’s sevens rugby, swimming, shooting and archery.
Wong commended FASANOC on tabulating the report to Government and will await the response during the announcement of the 2015 Budget next month.
Wong adds the participation budget figures during the Olympics in Rio stands at $1 million (US$500,000).
So far, only the Fiji men’s sevens side and the Fiji Under 23 football side have qualified for the 2016 Rio Olympics.
Meanwhile, vodafone Flying Fijians back-rower, Peceli Yato has put his hand up for selection to be part of the national 7s team to the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.
The 22 year old, who plays club rugby for Clermont in France, says it will be an honor and a privilege to get a call-up from national 7s coach, Ben Ryan.
“I’ve just heard that I’m in the training squad so I can come here to Fiji to play sevens for Rio; so I’m looking forward to being part of the team to the Olympics.”
Meanwhile, Ryan has set his sights on several overseas-based players he is interested in roping in for sevens rugby’s maiden appearance in the Olympic Games next year such as Yato, Levani Botia, Semi Kunatani, Samisoni Viriviri and Leone Nakarawa.
