Oceania keen to compete in 5th Asian Indoor Games says ONOC President

ASHGABAT,16 SEPTEMBER 2015 (ONOC) ---- The Oceania National Olympic Committees (ONOC) was officially welcomed by the President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow at the inauguration of the 34th Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan.

In welcoming Oceania and the 45 National Olympic Committees members of OCA, President Berdimuhamedow said that his country was working in earnest in preparation for the hosting of the 2017 5th Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games (5th AIMAG).

“At present the work on the preparation for this international sport holiday is being carried out at a high pace,” said President Berdimuhamedow,

Both President Berdimuhamedow and President of OCA Sheikh Ahmad Al Fahad Al Sabah said they were delighted to welcome Oceania to the fold and the 5th AIMAG in two years time.

ONOC President Dr Robin Mitchell in response said the Oceania family of National Olympic Committess (NOCs) and associate members were honoured to be in Ashgabat for the 34th OCA General Assembly and also see first hand the preparation carried out by the hosts of the 2017 5th AIMAG.

“Representatives of the 17 National Olympic Committees and seven associate members of Oceania together with our Secretary General Ricardo Blas are here to marvel at the wonderful facilities that are nearing completition well in advance of the 2017 Games,” said Dr Mitchell.

“In November last year the Secretary General Blas and I made our first visit to Turkmenistan to sign the Memorandum of Understanding between OCA, the Government and National Olympic Committee of Turkmenistan and ONOC which confirmed the kind invitation of His Excellency Sheikh Ahmad Al Fahad Al Sabah for us to join you in 2017 to celebrate AIMAG 2017 here in Ashgabat.

“Except for three countries in our region all of us here today represent countries with populations well below a million people, but we’re passionate about sport and my fellow administrators from Oceania are keen to give their sportsmen and women the opportunity to pit their skills against your athletes in two years time.

“Thank you for your kind hospitality, congratulations on the magnificient facilities that will host all of us in 2017 and may I in closing on behalf of my colleagues thank our hosts President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow and the people of Ashgabat, the Olympic Council of Asia and ANOC President Sheikh Ahmad and members of OCA and wish you all the best in your preparations for the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.”

The 34th OCA General Assembly will be a one day affair and will also see the election of new office bearers for the next four years (2015-2019)......PACNEWS
