In the Men’s Singles final it was a rematch of 2018 ITTF-Oceania Cup, with Heming Hu facing Dean Shu in a showdown for the title.
Shu led the Aussie 2-0 and looked like he was going to extend his lead as he led 9-7 in the third. However, the ever tenacious Hu didn’t give in, and stole the third to set his campaign for the title back in motion.
From then on it was all one way traffic. The more experienced Hu looked in cruise control, finding his rhythm to take the next three games, sealing the win 4-2 and securing the Men’s Singles title and an early lead in the race to the 2019 ITTF-Oceania Cup.
The Women’s Singles final also proved to be a close affair with the Yee sisters battling over the top of the podium. Sally Yee took the opening two games, before Grace managed to claw two games back on the board to level matters. The run couldn’t continue however and Sally won the next two games to win the title 4-2. This makes it two titles in a row for the older Yee sister after recently taking down the 2018 Pacific Cup against her younger sibling.
Overall Fiji was the dominant force, taking four of the five titles on offer; Sally Yee, Grace Yee and Vicky Wu each coming away with two titles from the event.
