Fijian Government eyes long-term relations with PGA Australia

SUVA, 15 OCTOBER 2015 (FIJI TIMES) ----The Fijian Government is keen to get into a long term partnership with PGA Australia to promote the sport of golf and the premier event, the Fiji International.

Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama who officially opened the second Fiji International on Tuesday said the partnership with PGA Australia wasn't just limited to staging the Fiji International but also raising the profile of golf in the country.

"It is about getting more Fijians to develop a love for the game," Bainimarama said.

"There needs to be golf clinics in schools.

"We are certain that there are more Vijay Singhs out there and we want to give them the opportunity and encouragement to hit their own holes in one.

"We want professional golfers to come to Fiji with their families not only to play golf but explore our other attractions.

"Steve Jeffress is back to defend the title and it is a clear indication of the importance of this tournament as part of the OneAsia circuit and our growing status as a PGA destination."

Bainimarama said the Fiji International was now a Fijian brand.

He said former number one Vijay Singh had done the nation proud.

"Vijay has come a long way since he was a caddy in Lautoka," Bainimarama said.

"He has done the nation proud by making it to the top ranks of international golf and bringing credit to Fiji.

"Vijay is certainly an example to young Fijians of what can be achieved with drive and determination and we again pay tribute to his skills and look forward to seeing him in action here once again."....PACNEWS
