PNG Government gives guarantee to host 2016 FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup

PORT MORESBY, 13 OCTOBER 2015 (THE NATIONAL) ---- Papua New Guinea Prime Minister Peter O’Neill has assured the country that his Government will do everything to ensure PNG hosts the 2016 FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup in Port Moresby.

O’Neill gave the undertaking after meeting with PNGFA president David Chung and the 2016 FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup Local Organising Committee at Parliament House last Thursday.

The Prime Minister said he would direct stakeholders and relevant government departments to pool their resources for the staging of the event.

Chung had been under immense pressure from a visiting FIFA delegation on the condition of football stadiums in the country.

Chung, as president of the Oceania Football Confederation, is one of the six FIFA vice-presidents.

The PNG soccer chief convinced the world soccer governing body that PNG could host the event after receiving a guarantee from the National Government.

Chung told The National that he was a relieved man upon hearing O’Neill’s reassurance.

“The Prime Minister, together with the Sports Minister Justin Tkatchenko, will take charge to ensure everyone is cooperating and working towards meeting the FIFA deadline of Oct 15 (Thursday.)

Curtain Brothers general manager Justin McGann told The National that his company would make an official statement regarding the status of the Sir Hubert Murray Stadium hosting the U20 FIFA World Cup next year.

It is understood that Curtain Brothers have submitted their CAD design for the stadium.

After the meeting with the Prime Minister, the company assured PNGFA that they would work together to meet the deadline. The FIFA U20 World Cup will use the stadiums in Port Moresby for the staging of the tournament.

Chung said the Prime Minister had pushed for the Port Moresby venues despite the PNG Sports Foundation wanting to upgrade the Sir Ignatius Kilage Stadium as well for the World Cup.

Chung said FIFA had the given the thumbs up to Port Moresby’s medical facilities, while security would be integrated with the Local Organising Committee’s plan and be submitted to FIFA.....PACNEWS
