Farina to coach Fiji

SUVA, 09 OCTOBER 2015 ( FIJI TIMES) ---Former Socceroos coach Frank Farina has been appointed as the new Fiji Football Association national coach.

After weeks of rumours of him succeeding Juan Carlos Buzzetti for the top post, Farina finally signed a two-year contract with the Fiji FA executives during a press conference in Ba yesterday.

The key focus for Farina will be to guide the Fiji under-23 team at the

2016 Rio Olympics and the Oceania Nations Cup which serves as the playoff for the Confederations Cup.

Buzzetti's four-year term ends this December and the Fiji FA board decided not to renew his term as they head into a new direction.

Apart from his duty as national coach Farina will also be the mentoring director for all the local coaches.

Fiji FA president Rajesh Patel said Farina had a clause of a further extension to his contract after the initial two-year term.

Patel said they mutually agreed for a short term contract to see the country progress before making a decision accordingly.

"Carlos has done a good job for Fiji and has served four years of his contract," he said.

"Now there is a new direction we are heading into."

Farina said he had a good working relationship with the president, vice-president Tarunesh Reddy and the board.

Farina, who was in charge of the Fiji team at the recent FIFA U20 World Cup, said it was a long road to lift the standard of the sport.

He warned that there would be challenges with no quick fixes or miracles.

"Football is a difficult game," he said.

"There is a lot of possibility and lot of potential not only for player development but coaching development as well.

"There is a lot of work to be done."

Farina said more accredited coaches were needed.

"The more coaches that we get through the courses the better they become and the better players will become," he said.

"You only develop the players by having good coaches.

"The national U23 side is going to the Olympic Games. There are extra spots for Oceania at the FIFA U17 and U20 World Cups and I would like Fiji to have one of those spots."

Farina's playing career spanned in Australia, Belgium, France, Italy and England.

He played for the Socceroos from the late 1980s through to the 1990s.

Farina coached Australia from 1999 to 2005....PACNEWS
