Team Tonga heads to Glasgow 2014

The members of the Team Tonga for the Commonwealth Games head to Glasgow commencing this week. According to Secretary General, Takitoa Taumoepeau the Chef de Mission for the team, Dr ‘Amanaki Fakakovikaetau has arrived safely to Glasgow last weekend.


Tonga will take part in four sports, namely, Athletics, Boxing, Swimming and Weightlifting for a team size of about 28 athletes and officials. Takitoa also added that the Boxing team was based and trained in Auckland and they will be led by Delhi-Bronze medallist, Uaine Fa jnr. Junior Fa has also been confirmed as the Flag Bearer for Tonga in the Opening Ceremony.


Further, the Hon. Minister of Internal Affairs & Sports, Lord Vaea and Lady Vaea will also attend the Games as well as Commonwealth Sports Ministers meeting which is held at the time of the Games.

 Also joining the members of Team Tonga in Glasgow will be President, Lady Tu’ivakano and Takitoa Taumoepeau, Secretary General of the Tonga CGA.

 The team participation at the Games was also possible through the financial assistance of His Majesty’s Government towards airfares. The fund for participating is also covered by the Organizing Committee with a grant for travel for 17 members plus the accommodation and meals are free. The President and members of the Executive Committee wish to extend their gratitude and appreciation for the grant from His Majesty’s Government and all those who have been contributed their time and effort in ensuring that the team gets to Glasgow.

 The Opening Ceremony for the Games will be early Thursday morning (Tongan time) which is Wednesday evening (23rd July) in Scotland. The Games will be opened by the Head of the Commonwealth, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
