Team Tonga at the Winter Olympic Games, Sochi 2014

The Vice Mayor welcomed each participating team and concluded with the raising of each flag for each respective country.

In attendances at the ceremony were Mathias Ihle (Chef de Mission), Isabel Barschinski (Coach), Bruno Banani (Athlete), Leafa Wawryk (Admin Personnel), and were joined by President, Lady Robyn Tu’ivakano and Secretary General Takitoa Taumoepeau.

According to Chef de Mission Mathias, the occasion was special as it marked a new chapter in the history of sports in the Kingdom. It was the first time for the little island Kingdom and the Tonga National Olympic Committee (NOC) to participate in the Winter Olympic Games.

He added that “Team Tonga presence in Sochi is a realization of a Dream that was founded several years ago, 10,000 kilometres away in the warm and oceanic weather of the South Pacific. The dream has made all of us proud, and so as the people of Tonga.”

The Opening Ceremony for the XXII Winter Olympic Games will take place on Friday 7th and Bruno Banani will compete in Luge on Saturday 8th and Sunday 9th February.
