MIA/TASANOC Workshop – Monday 21st October, 2013

The Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) which also responsible for sports has made a joint effort with the Tonga Association of Sports and National Olympic Committee (TASANOC) to conduct a national workshop with all National Sports Federations.

The goal of the workshop is to strengthen the capacity for effective collaboration between Government, TASANOC and its members National Federations (NF’s) in the Kingdom. The initiative is taking into account to prepare our best sports team for Tonga in view of the Pacific Games to be hosted here in 2019. Further, sports activities are also tools which contribute for the elimination of NCD’s in the Kingdom.

The facilitators for the workshop are Takitoa Taumoepeau, Secretary General, Hiko Fungavaka, SDO of TASANOC, Netina Latu, Tu’ivaita Ueleni and ‘Onetoto ‘Anisi from MIA.

According to Takitoa he commented that this workshop will be an opportunity to sit down face-to-face with members of National Federations so that we can answer the three management questions of “Where we are?”, What are we doing?” and “How can we get there?” in view of their plan, preparation, activities towards the Pacific Games 2015 in PNG and 2019 which we will host here. He added, this “partnership” between MIA and TASANOC can only strengthen our working relationship which will only benefits the members, that is, the NF’s and their athletes.

The result from the recent Pacific Mini Games in Wallis and Futuna had highlighted so many things ranging from weaknesses to strengths as well as opportunities to do better in next Games. It also point us which way and direction to take if we are to improve and do better in future Games.

“We had been doing and involving in regional sports for over 50 years. Despite all these times, we are still in the bottom echelon of the equation in terms of results versus the sum of money that we have invested and spent in sports. Therefore, we need to change these” according to Takitoa.

The workshop is expecting about 50+ delegates from all NF’s in Tonga.
