Samoan archer a living testimony to glorify God

Pint sized Samoan archer Maureen Epati- Tuimalealifano might be small in stature but she is on fire for God.

Even before coming to London 2012, the 41 year old has been on the offensive spiritually praying and fasting for her performance.

Apart from bringing her bow and arrows- equipment for competition, she has come prepared spiritually with her Daily devotional and Bible.

“On that day (Tuesday 31 July)I asked God to confirm a word for me because I believe in my heart I’m here for a purpose and on that day just prior to my competition one of the doctors I’m not sure whether from Indonesia came to me and said God bless you and we support you.

“And I was excited about that because I don’t know the women and two minutes later, one of the archers said she’s also a Christian just walk up to me and said you have all the confidence and I was shocked myself. And I said thank you God we’re here and I know you always here.”

Maureen is a member of the Congregational Christian Church at home in Apia, she attends the Rhema bible study every Friday and travels 30 kilometers to her village church at Falelatai every Sunday.

Speaking to PACNEWS, the Bank of Samoa Human Resources and Administration Manager was at ease sharing how real God has been to her.

However, let’s rewind a bit because the former golfer has just been in the sport for at least two years. Last August she won a silver the Pacific Games in Noumea in the Compound category, but last December she switched ….because Compound is not competed in the Olympics.

She outshone other Samoan contender’s for one of four spots to the London Olympic. The others were taken up by Fiji and Australia.

So within seven months she’s had to make a lot of sacrifices and adjustments to the new discipline.

She had stints in China, Australia and New Zealand but it wasn’t until July 3 that she was confirmed to come to the Olympics.

“So in coming here and competing against the world’s number two, although I didn’t win a medal I’m already a winner.

“And everyone said you are smiling because I know my God is with me and I have that peace.

“I went through the competition and I believe I did well.”

The mother of two grown up sons says her boys have also taken up archery in New Zealand and at the same time they play rugby and other sports.

Apart from reading and communicating with the Almighty daily or almost every minute, she Skype’s with her husband whose back home in Apia every morning and evening.

She is also looking forward to returning to work after being away for 13 weeks.

Her plans are to go back and help promote archery to the younger generation.

“Anyone can take up archery even at my age. You just need to have strength in your upper body, must be focused and have good eye-sight.

“I’d like to come back (next Olympics in Rio) but it all depends on what God permits.”

In the meantime she is just enjoying the remainder of her time at the London Olympics.
