PNG Flag Bearer - Steven Kari

Up and coming weightlifter, Steven Kari was Papua New Guinea's flag bearer at the Opening Ceremony of the 2010 Inaugural Youth Olympic Games.

Steven is the first and only Papua New Guinean athlete to have qualified for the Youth Olympic Games. At the Oceania Championships which was also the Youth Qualifier in Fiji in May, Steven won gold in the junior event and silver in the senior event, and also won 2 golds in the South Championships Senior and Junior events.

Steven was assisted by a fairly young team with new lifters to help him qualify through the aggregate team points, and his outstanding performance helped him achieve his goal.

At the 2009 Commonwealth Championships he finished 5th in the senior event out of 14 lifters. Steven was also a member of Team PNG to the 2008 Commonwealth Youth Games in Pune, India.
