Welcome to the Olympics Team Republic of Marshall Islands
Team RMI was welcomed into the ceremony area by members of the National Youth Theatre dressed as ‘court jesters’ adding to a traditional Shakespearian theme, which is said to feature in the Olympics opening ceremony. As well as brightly coloured jesters, there were acrobatics and gold-sprayed bikes, making it a really colourful
spectacle for the athletes.
The athletes from the Marshall Islands were guided into the ceremony, and introduced to the village Mayor for the event, Dame Tessa Jowell. Dame Tessa was instrumental in bringing the Games to London. She started the proceedings and asked the Chef De Missions to come onto stage one by one for their national anthems and to watch their country’s flag raised.
The Marshall Islands were joined at the welcoming event by their nations president, Christopher Loeak, and First Lady Anono Leiom, who were beaming with pride as their flag was symbolically raised and national anthem rang out across the athletes’ village.
Under the blazing sunshine and 30 degrees temperature, Chef De Mission Anthony Muller presented a gift from the Marshall Islands to Dame Tessa before he was asked to sign the glass Olympic truce walls, of which, each nation’s NOC signed.
After the signing of the truce wall, the acrobats and court jesters put on a memorable ending, as the Queen of the ceremony led the athletes on to a red carpet and back into the village to the sound of Queen’s – Don’t Stop Me Now.
The energetic performance has created an atmosphere that will last throughout the games. The Marshall Islands athletes are now preparing for the final preparation towards their competition. Let the Games begin!
