MINOC, CMI Host STOP HIV Training in the Marshall Islands

From June 26-29, Marshall Islands National Olympic Committee (MINOC) and College of the Marshall Islands (CMI) hosted the first Sports Training & Outreach Program HIV (STOP HIV) workshop led by Margaret Eastgate and co-facilitated by the MINOC Office Administrator and Sport Education Development Officer, Amy Sasser and FSMNOC Sport Education Program Coordinator, Cassidy Shoniber.

The course was held on CMI campus where 12 young aspiring coaches learned how to utilize sports movement activities to create awareness on such topics as HIV and Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs). The movement games are based on promotion of sport skills and the identification of life skills which are linked to sexual health education. This workshop also served as the beginning of the relationship between MINOC and CMI.

The group of participants identified cultural obstacles and decided the best approach to deal with those obstacles. Just as in many cultures throughout the Pacific, these are very sensitive subjects to deal with and as such, has to be dealt with delicately.

The participants were assessed by co-facilitators Amy Sasser and Cassidy Shoniber, with Margaret Eastgate on the final day of the workshop. They have already began putting together a 3-month action plan in which they will be assessed and then accredited. After being accredited, the goal is to get this group of people into the community to give what they learned to others through coaching.
