MISEP at First RMI Youth Festival

YF - Athletics - 200M

The first RMI Youth Festival was held in the first week of August, with Marshall Islands Sport Education Program (MISEP) coordinating the sports tournaments. During the week, Youth Festival participants gathered at the International Convention Center for conferences that outlined today's social and environmental issues, ranging from climate change to HIV/AIDS. The Youth Festival Organizing Committee agreed to have MISEP run the tournaments, which were held in the evenings shortly after their conferences at Delap Elementary School and the old Weather Station.

Teams were split into the atolls that the participants were representing, with a total of 24 atolls/teams. The games held were Men 3-on-3 Basketball, Coed Volleyball, Men and Women Athletics (100M, 200M, 4x100M Relay, Long Jump), Tug of War and Softball. Fun and sportsmanship was evident as outer-islander youths cheered and competed during the week long sports tournaments. At the end of the games on Saturday, prizes were awarded to the top teams. Majuro Atoll received 3rd place and in showing good sportsmanship offered up their prizes to Lib Atoll who did not rank in any of the games. Majuro Atoll Youth spokesman Maj Luise remarked that they (Majuro Atoll) would like to give their prizes away to Lib, and that "being the central district makes it easier for them to come across sports equipments, where as outer islands such as Lib do not have access to equipments".

This event was a great experience for the MISEP members to put their training in Public Presenting to practical use. Although the tournaments were very successful, the MISEP members acknowledged in their own review meeting that there were some areas that could have handled more efficiently. The MISEP group utilized many of the skills they learned during training presented by Sainimili Lavenia Talatoka, Coordinator of Oceania Sport Education Program.

The sporting events were made possible by volunteers from Marshall Islands Internal Affairs, School Enrichment Program, MISEP and Marshall Islands National Olympic Committee.
