Marshall Islands Sport Education Program

OSEP Director Sainimili (“Millie”) Lavenia Talatoka visited Majuro on May 18-28 for the roll out of MINOC’s Marshall Islands Sport Education Program (MISEP) Program. Talatoka conducted a number of Training Programs, which have been specifically designed to provide a community-based approach to sport education by developing flexible, relevant and modern curricula and training support resources in the areas of coaching, officiating and administration training.

Workshop topics include:

1. Sport in Communities Administrator Training Program:

The Sport in Communities Administrator Training Program has been designed with the specific purpose of providing a relevant, practically focused and culturally specific approach to the identification, training and ongoing development of MISEP Community Sports Administrators.

2. Community Coach/Official Training Program:

The Community Coach/Official Introductory Training Program has been designed with the specific purpose of providing a relevant, practically focused and culturally specific approach to the identification, training and ongoing development of MISEP Community Coaches and Officials.

Training Program Objectives:

The development of the Sports Administrator is seen as a very high priority for the Pacific Region as there is a well-documented perception that it is a lack of administrative skills in the communities, rather than a lack of technical knowledge and expertise, that is holding back the development of sport in the Pacific Region.

The broad objective of this Training Program is to introduce beginner Community Sports Administrators in the Pacific to various facets of club (community-based) / league based Sports Administration and to develop competencies in the areas of forming a club and planning to manage a small sporting event.

The workshop was highly successful and will award certification to the active participants, as the workshop was not concluded at the end of the sessions but will continue weeks after, in which participants will be assessed on two one-hour sports-based activities to be held in different districts or communities.
