Nauru, who sent 4 boxers over to train at the Dojo in July 2011, have returned back to the UK, this time with 2 of the original 4 boxers, Joseph Deireragea, 23, and Colin Caleb, 21.
This will be their last chance to train over in the UK before they head to Canberra, Austrialia for the Oceania Olympic trials in March.
Kiribati, who have been in the North West since last Autumn, have been training in various gyms in Crewe, close to their Manchester Metropolitan University base. Their team also consists of just 2 boxers, Tarieta Ruata, 33 and Andrew Kometa, 23. This is Tarieta’s last chance of trying to qualify for the Olympics in 2012, but he shows a lot of promise as he has years of experience under his belt.
Speaking back in November Tarieta said, “Kiribati people are very proud of me, and myself I am very proud, because this is my dream come true, and i’ll try my best to make it and to lift my flag at the Olympics”.
Both teams will be guided by the former Team GB National Performance Boxing Coach, Ian Irwin, who has coached the likes of, Ricky Hatton, and also the coach that helped lead Audley Harrison to the gold medal, back in Sydney, 2000.
Ian said about coaching Nauru, “ I want to give them some inspiration, they need the confidence to believe in themselves, and believe that there is something in this sport for them to get something out of it.”
