KIRIBATI IN LONDON.

VICE-PRESIDENT is the V.I.P.

The National Vice-President of Kiribati, Nei Teima Onorio  (who is also the Minister responsible for Sport) travelled with the delegation and attended a Welcome Party in SW London on July 25th., hosted by Sir Robert and Lady Malpas at their home.    (Image of her thanking the hosts.)


THE DELEGATION.

The Chef de Mission, Mr. David Collins, is also one of the Kiribati NOC Vice-Presidents.   He arrived on July 19th., in advance of the main party, to complete the validation of their accreditations.   The bulk of the rest arrived on July 22nd. and had their Team Welcome Ceremony (TWC), in company with other countries, on July 23rd.    Image of him at the Welcome Party.

The Minister, Nei Teima, is accompanied by a secretary and the Sports Officer, Mr. Willy Uan, who was the first Secretary-General of the KNOC when elected in November 2002.   The KNOC President (Mr. Peter Birati) and Secretary-General (Mr. Rota Onorio) also travelled.   Ms. Rosemary Mula is the official Guest of the President and Mr. David Little (ex-member of the KNOC) is Guest of the Secretary.   Mr. David Hudd is the Team Attache.     Image of Rota and Nei Teima applauding a speech at the Party., plus David Hudd acting as MC.

The Athletics team consists of Ms. Kaingaue David (competing in the W100m. on Friday, August 3rd.) and Mr. Nooa Takooa (competing in the M100m. on Sat. Aug. 4th.)   They are accompanied by their coach, Mr. Arobati (Albert) Brechtefeld, who is currently Secretary of Kiribati Athletics.   The Weight-lifter is David Katoatau who is the Commonwealth champion at 94kg. and competes on Sat. Aug. 4th.   He is the first-ever I-Kiribati athlete to be qualified for an Olympics.   His coach is Mr. Kokoria Iabeta who is President of Kiribati Weight-lifting.   Images of the track athletes with Albert, and of David Katoatau with Kokoria.

WELCOME PARTY.

As mentioned above, a Welcome Party was held at the home of Sir Robert and Lady Malpas on July 25th.   It was organised by David Hudd and his fund-raising group, the "British Friends of Kiribati" (BFK).   Apart from the delegation and the BFK and Malpas Family, others to attend included Mr. Michael Walsh (Honorary Consul of Kiribati in the UK) and his wife Nei Rotee (a Kiribati lady).   Also Mr. David Peel (Headteacher of the Russell School in Hertfordshire, which adopted and fund-raised for the Kiribati team) and his wife.
