Selection Criteria

Overview:

The Guam Basketball Confederation (GBC) announces that there will be open tryouts for the Men's and Women's National Basketball teams in preparation of the Pacific Games that will be held in Noumea, New Caledonia from August 27th through September10, 2011.  

 

The Pacific Games is the region’s premier sporting competition with teams from the countries of New Caledonia, Fiji, Tahiti, American Samoa, Papua New Guinea, Western Samoa, the Solomon Islands, CNMI, Cook Islands, Vanuatu, and Kiribati participating. 

 

Each applicant must fill out the required application forms provided to them by the GBC and must meet the requirements set out by the Federation and the Guam National Olympic Committee (GNOC). Each athlete is required to participate in the fundraising efforts to send Team Guam to the Games. The exact amount needed to fundraise will be announced by February 2011. 

Dates:

Tryouts will be held November 29 thru December 1, 2010 at the University of Guam (UOG) Field House from 6:30pm – 9:00pm.

  

The final rosters consisting of 20 nominations each for the Men’s and Women’s Basketball Team will be submitted on February 25, 2011 to the GNOC for review and final approval. 

Final Roster Announcement:

Announcement for the Men’s and Women’s Basketball National Teams for the 2011 Pacific Games will be posted on the GNOC website and through outreach efforts with athletes in the national network, as well as through the Guam Basketball Confederation website (http://www.fibaoceania.com/index.php?id=79). 

Eligibility:

Athletes must meet the residency guidelines as set forth by the GNOC. A copy of these guidelines will be made available to all who try out and is also available on the GNOC Website.  Go to www.oceaniasport.com, click on countries, select Guam, then select 2011 Pacific Games Athlete Selection Criteria.

 

The athlete must be in Good standing with the GBC and GNOC. Athletes must have the minimum ability to play the sport and have all skills necessary to run the drills of the sport.  They must also possess the aptitude to execute and run all the requisite drills associated with player development in the sport.

Each athlete must be a registered member of the GBC. A non-refundable membership fee of $25 must be paid to GBC for the year of 2010/2011. Checks can be made payable to Guam Basketball Confederation before trying out. Each athlete must have previous competition experience, such as: current/former athlete in a league team, college team, intra-mural college team, etc. 

Additional requirements for nominations:

  1. Sign and abide by the GBC Code of Conduct and any other applicable documents or forms required by the GBC, GNOC, Pacific Games Council (PGC), and the Pacific Games Organizing Committee (PGOC);
  2. Submit himself/herself without reservations to all doping control policies of the GBC, GNOC, PGC, PGOC and the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA);
  3. Commit to maintaining a coach-mandated training program from the time of nomination until the end of the specified international competition;
  4. Maintain contact with the National Team Coach and keep them informed about your training progress;
  5. Exhibit good sportsmanship, on and off the playing/practice field of play, and good character.
  6. Attend all mandated training camps or practices, unless other arrangements are made;
  7. Shall perform/participate in fundraising activities for the Guam National Team (GNOC) and the Guam Basketball Confederation
  8. Be a paid member of the GBC;

 

NOTE: Off-island athletes (i.e.: students) must try out for the team and are required to be back on island by summer vacation to train with the team and must provide proof that he/she is actively competing in the sport while abroad in the form of a coach/trainer certification, competition and training schedule, etc.  **This does not guarantee the athlete’s nomination to the team but will be given an opportunity to train with the team to see if there is cohesion amongst the players.

Tryouts:

November 29 through December 1, 2010: Tryouts at the UOG Field House from 6:30pm – 9:00pm. (Check PDN Sports Notes for updated time).

*ATHLETES ARE REQUIRED TO SIGN IN NIGHLTY UNTIL TRYOUTS END. 

Selection Procedure:

During Tryouts, the players will be evaluated by a panel of three coaches using a criteria described under Qualifying Standards along with the GBC Player Evaluation form. The panel will list each player being considered for each position, create a depth chart for all players, and they will list each player in order of selection.

 

The panel will then recommend a 20-man roster to the selection committee and GBC Board for approval and ratification.  After ratification, the GBC Board will submit the 20-man rosters (Men’s and Women’s) to the coaches.

 

***THE GBC WILL SEND THE FINAL LIST OF NOMINEES TO THE GNOC FOR REVIEW AND APPROVAL.

If a nominee accepts the nomination and is selected to the Guam National Team by the GNOC and then later withdraws, the athlete will forfeit all rights and may be subject to fines and/or sanctions (i.e., Not able to try out for the team for one quadrennial, which could jeopardize the athlete’s ability to take part in the: Olympic Games, East Asian Games, Mini Pacific Games, Pacific Games and the Micronesian Games).

Selection Committee:

The Selection Committee consists of Experienced Coaches in the community, past Board members of GBC, and former National Players who are not trying out. 

Athletes will be identified and/or selected by the Selection Committee based on their previous outstanding performances and/or recognition at a) past national tournaments; b) Local Tournaments; c) other elite level competition.

 

** Conflict of Interest: If an athlete being considered for nomination has a conflict of interest with an individual(s) in the selection committee and/or GBC Board, the individual(s) in the selection committee and/or GBC Board shall recuse him/herself from any discussion and decision regarding the athlete’s nomination ** 

 

Due Process:

Any athlete who is displeased with his/her ranking, placement, or nomination will first meet with the Guam Basketball Confederation Team Coach and/or Board. If the athlete is still displeased he/she has the right to send a grievance to the Guam National Athletes Commission (GNAC). The athlete may contact the GNOC at 647-4662 for assistance in contacting the proper GNAC Members or send an email to gnoc@teleguam.net and the grievance will be forwarded to the proper person(s).

Player Selection Criteria:

  • Attitude – towards self-improvement, staff, and teammates
  • Discipline – including punctuality and work ethic. 
  • Skills – technical ability (shooting, rebounding, ball-handling).
  • Experience- understanding of the game
  • Athleticism – natural ability (i.e. speed, agility, strength)
  • Size/Potential – physical attributes
