Dame Valerie Adams guest-speaker at National Sports Awards

Because 2016 was a successful year for the NOC, seccess from the Olympic Games in Rio, with 5 of the 9 athletes qualifying on their own merit to represent their country at the games. Also national development was on a high throughout 2016, with a few of the National Federations conducting junior training sessions lining up with the school sports calendar.

Regional events continued to be organised and coordinated, with the Cook Islands Volleyball Federation hosting the Oceania Qualifiers in Rarotonga. Rarotonga has also been targeted to host 2 major regional events in 2017, Oceania Basketball Qualifiers as well as the Oceania Beach Handball Championships.

Also we saw the success of the Women's Rugby 7's team as they qualified for the repercharge competition held in Ireland mid to late last year 2016, if the Women's Rugby 7's team qualified, then they would of attended the Olympic Games in Rio, making history for the Cook Islands in the team's catergory.

Cook Islands Sports would like to thank the Cook Islands Government, Edgewater Resort & Spa, Air New Zealand, Polynesian Rentals, Bluesky Cook Islands, Bank of the Cook Islands, and all their trophy sponsors for their continued support towards the National Sports Awards, meitaki maata.

That's great - we want you to have your say and share your thoughts with the world. However, we have a few rules that you must follow to keep it fun for all.
