VOA Champions Help Create Awareness In Nasinu

The Ministry of Social Welfare, Women and Poverty Alleviation, Education Ministry's National Substance Abuse Advisory Council and FASANOC Voices of the Athlete Champions began a one week awareness programme that started at the Nadawa Methodist Hall on Monday 13th November, 2017.

The one week programme with the community theme "Stronger Families, Safer Children" is aimed at creating awareness concerning child abuse and child neglect.

NSAAC personnel and FASANOC VOA Champions advocated on a variety of subjects including Child Protection, Environment, Non-Communicable Diseases, Drug Free Lifestyle and HIV/AIDS.

Participants were divided into groups and were given ten minutes at various stations that advocated or created awareness on different topics.

Nadawa Methodist Church acting deacon Taniela Qutonilaba said he was thankful to the team for their outreach and awareness programme.

"We have learnt so much from how to be more involved in our individual households to the importance of the environment and healthy living," he said.

"For me personally I enjoyed the Go Green station which focused on the environment

"Usually we take this for granted but how the Champion explained it to us made us think that if we harm the environment it will in turn harm us."

Mr Qutonilaba said he was thankful to the Child Protection station which focused on the rights of children and how they as parents should be aware of the laws and legislation covering child abuse and child neglect.

"The only thing was there was little time to learn so much so we hope there will be another awareness programme in our area soon," he said.

Department of Children Community Child Protection Program Officer Malinda Tugaga said they wanted to take the week to reach out to communities in the Nasinu area to advocate and create awareness on child abuse and child neglect.

The awareness programme continues throughout the week and will cover Kalabu, Nadera and Narere and finishes with a Family Sports Day at the Narere Grounds next to the Narere Police Post.
