Apolonia Vaivai wins Commonwealth and Oceania GOLD

  • Gold Medal in the Commonwealth Championship
  • Gold Medal in the Oceania Championship
  • 101Kg for snatch; 126Kg for Clean & Jerk and 227Kg Total lift
  • Broke the oldest Oceania Records set in year 2000, 5 times during the competition
  • Apolonia’s third Commonwealth Title in 3 years
  • Only Fiji Athlete to date to have ever won any Commonwealth Title
  • Ranked 7 on the World Rankings for 2017 based upon the performance


Apolonia Vaivai won the Gold medals in both the Commonwealth Championships and Oceania Championships on Friday night in a sensational competition.

Apolonia recorded a personal best of 227 Kg for her 69Kg Weight category. Apolonia lifted 101 Kg in the snatch and 126Kg in  the Clean & Jerk. 

In second place was Punam Yadav of India with a total lift of 217Kg, Sarah Davis of England was third with 212Kg and Philippa Malone of Australia in 4th with 202Kg. 

Apolonia broke the Oceania Record 5 times during the competition – once in Snatch and twice each in the Clean & Jerk and the Total Lifts.

She broke the old record of 100Kg in the snatch and 122Kg in Clean & Jerk and a total of 222Kg set by Michelle Kettner of Australia in 2000.

This was the third year in a row that Apolonia won a Commonwealth Championship Title. 

Meanwhile Eileen Cikamatana will be competing on Saturday at 12:00noon (Fiji time) in 90Kg Weight Category
