Fiji Surfing conducts first ever Solidarity funded coaching course

Level 1 & 2 Surf Coaching Course

July 20th to 27th – Fiji

Fiji Surfing Association (FSA) has created world history in hosting the inaugural Surfing Coaching Course funded by Olympic Solidarity. With Surfing on the Olympic Games program for Tokyo 2020, the sport is now eligible to benefit from support of the IOC Solidarity program.

A successful week long course was conducted by Lee Ryan of New Zealand, an approved and certified ISAF coach. Lee was a wealth of knowledge and his delivery was clear and understood by all in attendance. The course was a massive opportunity to improve the standard of Surf Coaching in the region and provide our surfers with the most up to date surf coaching methodology.

Participants were invited from our neighbouring countries as well as in Fiji and totalled 12 participants made up of 3 from Samoa, 3 from Vanuatu and 6 from Fiji.

The course was conducted at the Rendezvous Surf Resort at Uciwai near Nabila. located 35 minutes from Nadi Airport and 12 minutes from the surf.

Over the 6 class days participants were shown a variety of topics emphasising safety throughout via power-point presentation, practical demonstrations (on land and sea) and clear instructions. Video analysis was conducted between the group in some good and not so good surf.

Participants had ample time to try the suggested techniques between themselves with feedback and discussion throughout the duration of the course. All grew to an improved level of presentation of a surf-coaching lesson from beginner through to advanced.

At the completion of the course participants were provided a workbook, detailing the 40hrs of surf coaching that now needs to be completed and logged. Once the 40hrs has been completed they become certified coaches.

FSA thanks Olympic Solidarity for the funding and assistance and to ISA presenter Lee Ryan for sharing his experiences and knowledge. Vinaka vakalevu to all participants and we look forward to Surfing in Fiji and Oceania developing towards participation at the Olympic Games.
